Experience the forefront of storage technology with NEC HYDRAstor, a disk-based grid storage system meticulously crafted for backups and archiving. Developed by NEC Corporation, this state-of-the-art solution integrates advanced features such as content-addressable storage, global data deduplication, variable block size, Rabin fingerprinting, erasure codes, data encryption, and load balancing.

Developed by NEC in collaboration with Princeton University, the NEC HYDRAstor technology was built for scalability in terms of performance and capacity. The only way to achieve this was to use the grid concept as the foundation with the concept of nodes that could be added to the grid to increase scalability. Each node could be inserted into the grid to expand the capacity while maintaining a single global namespace—two node types were introduced to provide additional performance or capacity depending on the customers’ requirements.

 The Hybrid Node (HN) can provide additional performance to the grid with additional 10Gbe ports into the customer’s network, as well as adding additional capacity. The Storage Node (SN) can provide additional storage to the grid only but at a more affordable cost. Currently, the HYDRAstor technology allows for a total grid capacity of 165 nodes (any combination of HN and SN), which equates to approximately 27PB of raw capacity or around 270PB of usable capacity after deduplication and compression.

To ensure that the HYDRAstor architecture can provide such massive scalability in a single namespace,  other key technologies had to be introduced to ensure data validity, security, and availability. Key to this was the introduction of the HYDRAstor Distributed Resilient Data (DRD) architecture, which uses erasure coding to provide for multiple disk and node failures within a single grid. This DRD technology also allows customers to “dial” the level of resiliency they want based on their risk provision, budget and performance requirements.

In order to be relevant within the backup environment it was crucial that the HYDRAstor technology has integration software capabilities with the like of Veritas Netbackup and other leading backup software OEM’s. To this end, HYDRAstor developed several “plug-ins” which allows the technology to easily use backup software vendors API’s to deliver a more efficient and integrated backup solutions to our customers.

Outside of the HYDRAstor products available directly from NEC, Kaizen Technologies provides a 3^rd Party SaaS offering that simplifies the monitoring and reporting of HYDRAstor grids and environments. HVIEW (HYDRAstor View) is a cloud-based SaaS offering that provides resellers and customers with dashboards with drill-down analytics into their environments. Further, HVIEW provides alerting systems to provide proactive monitoring of the environments and forecast capabilities to ensure that customers can plan to procure additional equipment as and when required. HVIEW is offered as a subscription service model at an additional cost to the customer.

Kaizen Technologies provides two support types for the HYDRAstor product based on the technical capabilities of the reseller in each region. The base support option provides the customer, via the reseller, with 1^st and 2^nd line support capabilities.

The second support option is offered to resellers that invests in the technical competencies required to install and support their customers, Kaizen Technologies will then provide 2^nd level support to such resellers. The support services provided to the resellers and their customers are delivered through the Kaizen service partner, Support Now, which has had over a decade of experience installing, commissioning, and delivering Hydrastor technologies in the field.

Support Now is capable of providing remote services as well as onsite services to resellers and customers on a 24/7 basis. Any support services requirements will be priced according to the term of the hardware and software purchase, while onsite services will be priced separately as professional services engagement.
